Just interested (long time ago;-)

Amazing how many Russian words can be recognized when you can just read the
cyrillic charset.

Don't know how many, but there are and have always been.
As there are many Russians who speak fluent Netherlands. Some even without
that "typical Russian" accent!
I remember the radio transmissions in Dutch (Netherlands) language from
Radio Moscow (Radio Moskou) during '50 and '60 years. Daily on 50M SW. ;-)
No there were no jamming radio transmitters from "this side" and we were
total free to listen that radio.  What a time;-)
Have been on board Russian merchant ships too, in that time. Met very
friendly and hospital people. But just very few Russians who could speak
English:-(
There have never been a problem to walk on-board Russian ships in the
harbour. But the Russian people were not allowed to go on shore (e.g with
us into the city, or coming to my home) by Russian authorities (KGB)
The guard at the gangway (with red band on his sleeve) never asked us
anything. Just said "hello" when we said "Hello!". He
only was there to
check shipsmembers going ashore.

But those times have changed;-)
Today we see and met Russian sailors all over the place. In the shops,
restaurants and the bars! Can talk free.
Same with visiting Russian naval ships in our naval base. Crews visiting
each other on board their warship, having talk and (of course) a drink.
You might be surprised how many naval names/expressions are "imported" from
the Dutch language;-) (Tsar Peter the Greath and Krohnstad SPB)

Sure. But not everyone has the opportunity (and time) and feeling to learn
other languages.

But it is a very interesting language. Certainly as you know how many in
culture/history our countries have in common!

BTW: I always use the list with transcriptions (Translitteration of Slavic
Cyrillic characters into Latin characters) . See

I also use a template with cyrillic characters as a printed overlay on my
QWERTY keyboard;-)
