I would recommend a 486 with an interwave based card like GUS plug and
play for basc tracking. The interwave card must have 4 meg ram or more. But,
for the most serious things, a pentium or cyrix 133 mhz or more with impulse
tracker seems to be the best mix. Gus 1 meg capacity and slow Gf1 can't do
enought for big compos. But with a gus or interwave, you are not forced to
have a pentium system. Software mixing are in many ways better than hardware
mixing but the cost is that you need a very fast cpu.
MB> Screamtracker and/or Impulsetracker and/or Fasttracker
Fastracker, with the ease of use, or impulse tracker, for it superior
sound quality. Screamtracker is obsolete and gives very poor sound quality
without a GUS,
Also, i woiuld recommend to anyone that have fast pentiums to use a midi
renderer software to make impr4essive midi compos..
