Geonet, a collaboration between the Earthquake Commission and GNS Science, 
reported a 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit around 10 kilometers east of the 
city at 0100 GMT with a second, 4.4-magnitude quake hitting around nine 
minutes later. This was followed by a further 6.0-magnitude aftershock at 
0220 GMT.
