Even if it was economically feasible to upgrade the PS' CD-ROM drive
(which I'm sure it would be), that would create a rift in the PS
standard, sorta like Sega did with the Genesis vs. Sega CD. Game
companies might be inclined to master games for the faster drive, which
would leave players with older PlayStations either out in the cold
entirely, or playing games that are extremely choppy and slow-loading.
Also, remember that a 24X drive does not read at 24X all the time. It
depends on where it's reading on the disc (it gets faster the closer it
gets to the inside of the disc). The average speed of those is more like
18X or so, which is still pretty good . . .
