I've been toying with an Alesis compressor on my rig.  I don't like the 
difference it makes.  A P with an EMG "P" pickup sounds incredible.  
Why dont you try installing EMG's in your J?.  I do have a set of 
Carvin J style pickups you could try if you want.  Great pickups for a 
4 string but not wide enough for my 6.  I replaced them with EMG's. ;))
