Yup... the J is slightly narrower than a Strat, and the P is wider... 
probably wide enough to hold 5 strings with J-bass spacing.

I'm pretty sure the stock configuration for the P's pickup is a kind of 
staggered humbucker, unlike the J's pure single coils.  I just went for broke 
and installed an active Jackson P/J system on my Memphis P copy... well... I 
shouldn't say that I went for broke... I got the P/J system because GC was 
out of the P-only system and the guy had promised one to me so he didn't 
charge extra.
