subject: bass advice

Ok bassists, can you give me some advice?
I have a 70's J bass, totally stock except for having been made lefty.
I'm not all that fond of the tone and want to check into other (cheap)
options for now.
I'm thinking P-bass. Mr Music has a proper lefty 70's P for $475 and I
know the Fender offshore jobbies are cheap too. I understand the neck
is wider on the P than the J (very narrow).
Can you characterize the difference between the J and the P?
I've been running the J through a rack compressor to tape but just don't
like the tone. Perhaps a P with an EMG.....
As I'm the only one in the Stringed Instrument Department, bass falls to
me.
Thanks.
