Only one way that I know of.  Buy a quality modem that can handle that
severe line disturbance.  Hopefully the modem on the other end will
hold on too.  My Sportster hardly misses a beat when the wife picks up
the extension.
I doubt that any of the Rockwell based modems will do it for you.

up if you picked up the phone, and held it for 5 sec. After that it would,

the 14.4 Sportster I had couldn't handle it. Actually, no other modem I have 
had since could handle it either.
