Since your ISP is using the X2 flavor of 56k, I would NOT suggest switching
o
a k56Flex version of 56k. If you want to get a *real* motorola chip based 56k
modem, you might be better off to get a USR for maximum compatibility with
your
ISP. Then again, 56k is a LOT more sensitive to phone line conditions and if
you don't have the *absolute* best lines, you're likely to have modem
problems.

Actually, my ISP is not using the X2 56K. They are 56K Flex, which is
what
I have. They said they use Motarolo modems. Do Motarolos only use X2? If so,
then they don't know what they are talking about. Anyway. I sent the modem
back for an exchange, but if the thing about the line condition is right,
then
they will find no problem, I'd imagine, when they test it, and I'm gona have
to fork out another $12 in restocking fee if I want an exchange. I could just
get the original back, but the thing that gets me about the line noise theory
is this.
I use a program called Kali to play multiplayer games over the Internet.
I
use the DOS version, which means I need a PPP dialer to connect to my ISP
through DOS. I use the Klos PPP dialer. It has a feature that monitors your
line connection between you, and your ISP, and gives you a send, & receive
data rate to judge the connection clarity. Most people who have no problem
using 56K modems tell me they get a send, & receive rate of 5700. Both these
rates should be about the same.
However, I get at my house, both rates equal out at 8100. I never receive
loss packets between me, & my ISP, unless I connect at 46K. This tells me
that
I'm getting a good connection. Me & my ISP are on the same Telco switch, so
they said that's why I get a good connection rate. So I'm gona go ahead, and
pay an extra $12 for the exchange, but if it still does it, I guess I'll have
to force it to connect at 44K, or even 42K, which is not worth it. It really
won't be any better than my 33.6K.
... John must be around here somewhere. The modem is still warm.
