I flashed the ROM of my BestData Smart One 56F successfully
before, and the initial connect speed moved up from an average
of 40K to 42K. Fine. When the next update came out, I tried
to do it again. Now the flasher warns "IMPORTANT: Do Not turn
off your computer or otherwise stop this process until all
modules are loaded." Okay, I didn't. The computer wasn't as
cooperative, however, and it locked up. I gave it fifteen
minutes, and nothing happened, so I had to hit Reset (since
Ctrl-Alt-Del wasn't working). Now the modem isn't working at
all. The flasher doesn't see it, nor does Trumpet or Commo or
other programs. Any command simply gets "ERROR" as a response.
Did I kill it? Is there any reasonable way to salvage the
situation? Or would I have to ship it to the company, probably
paying postage both ways, plus a maintenance fee, at which point
it's easier to just get a new modem.
... It is far easier to be wise for others than to be so for oneself.
