One of the "problems" is that there are several "versions" of "winmodems",
nd
they operate differently - some impose a much higher cpu load on your system
than do others. USR Winmodems, for example, don't represent much of a cpu
load
in comparison with some other "HSP" (Host System Processor) modems.
When properly installed on a suitable system, they work as well as any modem.

What I don't get about Winmodems is why after the failed attempt with RPI
modems back in the 14.4 days, why would they make that crap again. Winmodems
do the same thing the RPI modems did. I had an RPI Zoom 14.4. Didn't know
anything about modems, but found out the difference quick. I brought that
back, and bought a real hardware modem.
Now I go out, and try to buy a good name brand 56K modem, but find most
are Winmodems, or just as bad, Plug n Pray. I had to buy a low cost 56K to
get
a real hardware DOS/Win modem.
