Reminder - this weekend (May 30 - 31) the QEDIT Echo will be replaced
with the SEMWARE Echo on the FidoNet backbone. Be sure to send in (or ask
your sysop to) a AreaFix request for SEMWARE on Sunday.

Subj: DSZ -> ZedZap
Hello All!
For all of you who didn't see my msg to Carl Morris.
Listen up, people. This is how to make ?SZ use "ZedZap" parameters, using
DSZ as an example:
vvvvvv This is the significant part!!
DSZ port 1 speed 57600 pL8192 sz file.txt
The pLxxx command sets the "subpacket" length to x bytes. Normal ZModem uses
1024 bytes, while the ZedZap specification uses 8192 byte blocks.
Although strange, a quote from a doc may help. Registered ZModem users
will recognise this one. This is from the section on "Numeric
Parameters."
== Begin DSZBG.DOC cut ==
L (Default 0) If non zero, overrides the nominal length of data subpackets
within each ZMODEM frame. A smaller value speeds error recovery on noisy
lines, a large value (maximum 1024) reduces the overhead of CRC characters.
The call command resets this parameter to 0.
Please note that streaming ZMODEM has no direct equivalent to
XMODEM/YMODEM/JMODEM block length unless the zmodem l parameter is set non
zero. In the absence of errors, ZMODEM normally sends the entire file
without pause. If somebody claims ZMODEM's 1024 byte subpacket length is
slowing things down by more than one half per cent, he doesn't understand
ZMODEM and should be ignored.
== End ==
Frankly, I see no change in transmission speed with the larger blocks, at
least under FrontDoor. In fact, it will slow things down, since FD has to
resend the *entire* 8k block. IMHO, ZedZap is overhyped.
Make your own judgements. Your mileage may vary.
Enjoy.
Until swords part,
