I have a K56Flex modem here. I can use Qmodem to connect to my ISP at "high 
speed (43-46k or so, depending on local conditions.) My Qmodem is a DOS 
program. As long as you don't have a "winmodem" you should be OK using your 
56k modem in DOS.
BTW, my system has Win95 SR2 installed on it. I typically boot to "dos" (ie 
non-gui mode) and run my BBS in "dos" mode using MSDOS 7.10. :)
