Because there are those of us who stay as far away from C++ as possible, and
because it is easier to learn C before trying to learn a more complex
language such as C++.
While C++ may be good for writing applications, for systems level
programming, C is still the preferred choice.

why not go all the way??
You might get better value for money if you go for Stroustrup's "The C++
Progamming Language", unless you're after C books for retro/ collectibilty
factors!
