Any organization you are part of or have to deal with has to have some
regard for efficiency or they literally would never get anything
accomplished. Your point that democracy shouldn't be sacrificed is
certainly valid, but comparing the N F B to Nazism isn't helpful. No
doubt, there are people within the big political parties like the Democrats
or the Republicans who feel disempowered or that their voices aren't being
heard, but if they started using terms like Nazi, what would happen to
their credibility?
I am certainly not pleased by some of the policies of the N F B,
particularly its anti guide dog mentality, and this issue isn't helped when
people respond to me by saying, oh we're not really anti dog, in direct
contradiction of the way their training centres treat guide dog employers.
So I point out the obvious, that you can't say you're not anti dog if your
policies are anti dog, and then I work for change. If I called them Nazis
because they disagreed with me, do you think they'd now be asking me what
can we do to make the training centres more accommodating to guide dog
employers? I think this is how progress happens.
More importantly, what is it about the N F B that you like? why are you on
this list talking to people about blindness? Obviously, you care a great
deal about improving conditions for blind people or you wouldn't be making
the effort to comment on areas which concern you. What are some of the
areas where you feel the N F B philosophy has been helpful to you and where
do you think the N F B has already had some success in changing what it
means to be blind?
