Livingston native Charles H. Scales, Equal Opportunity Director at
NASA's Marshall Center, honored by national association

Charles Scales, director of the Marshall Center Equal Opportunity
Office, has been named a distinguished alumnus by the National
Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. The honor
recognizes graduates of historically and predominantly black colleges
and universities for their service to country, community, colleges
and universities. 

The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education
has honored Charles H. Scales as a Distinguished Alumnus for 2003.
Scales is director of the Equal Opportunity Office at NASA's Marshall
Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

Each year the association salutes approximately 150 of the nearly 1
million graduates of historically and predominantly black colleges
and universities for their service to country, community, colleges
and universities. Scales was recognized during a ceremony in
Washington, D.C. 

Scales is responsible for Marshall Center's comprehensive program to
ensure equal opportunity for all civil service and contractor
employees, based on merit and fitness and without discrimination.

Scales began his NASA career in 1973 as a cooperative education
student in Marshall's Management Services Office while attending
Alabama A&M University in Huntsville. He earned a bachelor's degree
in general business, and joined the Marshall Center as a
telecommunications specialist in 1975. 

For more than two decades he worked in program control, facilities,
resources management, information systems and business management at
the Marshall Center. He was appointed deputy director of the Equal
Opportunity Office in 1996 and was named director of the office in
1997. 

Scales has received several NASA honors, including the Space Flight
Leadership Award, NASA's Exceptional Service Medal and the Silver
Snoopy Award - awarded by the astronaut corps for dedication in
support of the Space Shuttle program.

He is active in the Huntsville community, serving in leadership
positions with the American Red Cross, Alabama A&M University
Athletics Community Resource Group, Rotary Club of Huntsville,
Leadership Huntsville/Madison County, Boy Scouts, and Center Grove
United Methodist Church. 

Scales, a native of Livingston, Ala., graduated from Livingston High
School in 1971. He is the son of Harriett Scales and the late Comie
Scales of Livingston.

The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education

historically black colleges and universities across the United States
