Having confronted Dr. All, Ed Grinnell, International Man Of Mystery,
exclaimed:
EG> Since many of you weren't even alive when that happened, let's try
EG> this: pick YOUR most memorable game. To make it easier to be objective,
EG> there are two types of games that you can pick, the most memorable game
EG> involving your favorite team and the the most memorable game not
EG> involving them. Heck, you can even make it a top 5 of each category.:-)
EG> Mine, involving Dallas:
EG> 1. Pittsburgh 35, Dallas 31 - Huh? Hey, I didn't say that your
EG> favorite team had to win. This game had it all, including Jackie
EG> Smith's drop of a TD pass that would turn into a FG that was the
EG> difference in the final margin.
This game just fell out of my top ten last year, one of the few NFL
games I've found really entertaining. My number one also features my
team on the losing side.
EG> 5. Buffalo 41, Houston 38 - Another painful overtime loss for Oiler
EG> fans. A 35-3 lead in the 3rd quarter is wasted and the Bills had
EG> overcome an NFL record 32 point deficit and it would take a win by the
EG> Houston Rockets for the city to lose the "Choke City" tag.
This could have made my list if I had actually seen it. I do
recall however being at a hockey game featuring our old minor team the
Hamilton Canucks. They gave regular updates of the score throughout the
game and everybody gasped as the final score was announced.
Anyway here is my top five, I won't divide it into home team
non-home team lists:
1) Saskatchewan 43 Hamilton 40, 1989 Grey Cup at The Skydome in
Toronto, Nov. 26, 1989. Picked by most observers as the greatest
CFL game ever played.
2) Hamilton 42 Toronto 25, Eastern Final Game 2 at Exhibition Place
in Toronto, Nov. 23, 1986. Toronto went into the game with 14
point lead in the total points series and had built up a 26 point
lead by the end of the first quarter. Hamilton came back and won
the total point series 59-56. Okay technically I didn't actually
watch the game, but listened to it on the radio while I delivered
pizzas, but I nearly went off the road several times when the
Ti-Cats came back, making this very memorable.
3) Calgary 55 Hamilton 48, at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Oct. 17,
1982. One of the highest CFL scoring games ever, with Tom
Clements at the helm of the Ti-Cats.
4) Edmonton 38 Toronto 36, 1987 Grey Cup at BC Place in Vancouver,
Nov. 29, 1987. Was considered the greatest game until the '89
classic.
5) University of Western Ontario 50 University Of Saskatchewan 40 in
OT, 1994 Vanier Cup, at The Skydome in Toronto, Nov. 19, 1994.
The only Vanier Cup (the national university football
championship in Canada) to go into overtime. Saskatchewan
rallies from an 18 point deficit to take the lead late. Western
is forced to kick a FG on the last play to send into overtime. In
OT a FG and a punt return TD gives the championship.
Sincerely Yours
