Again you are being unclear and your horrible analogies don't help.
Thanks for acknowledging that the folder contents display immediately =
and that the thumbnail extraction is a background activity. What I = still
don't get is that your assertion that it is a whole lot of = activity that
you don't need the system to spend resources on. It is a = background
activity. It's not clear why you are concerned about idle = time activity.
As for a corrupted file hanging the window, that would be =
interesting. Is this something you made up as speculation or something =
real because you never mentioned it before? If it is real, what type of =
file is this as there are different thumbnail extractors for different =
types. If you have third party software installed with video support it =
could be providing the extractor or even supplanting the system provided =
thumbnail extractors.

Yes the folder contents display immediately but the background =
activity is=20
the problem because if one of the files is corrupt or locked by =
another=20
process it hangs the whole window. It's also a whole lot of activity =
that I=20
don't need the system to spend resources on.
It's like driving a car that wants to slow down and read every street =
sign=20
and if one is blocked from view it stops and waits till it can see the =
sigh.=20
I just want to get to where I want to go and damn the stupid system =
reading=20
as I drive.
If I set the folder default template to say list or details view, it =
still=20
does this stupid reading every file thing. Is there no off switch?
There is another thing with this that I've noticed, it doesn't take =
the=20
first frame of a video and use that for the icon, instead it reads =
what=20
appears to be a random number of frames and then grabs one. If I were =
to=20
create a icon in each video file would that stop this nonsense?
When I open a decent sized folder, you know the green progress bar =
that=20
appears in the address bar, well it can take 4 or 5 minutes before it=20
completes. That's a whole LOT of background activity I can do without.

If I wanted one default view for local folders and another for =
remote=20
due to speed reasons I can't do that.
Are you saying that the folder contents are not displaying immediately =
with=20
thumbnail extraction happening in the background?

Thanks it does help but not a whole lot. Here's the annoyance I'm =
having.
I have a couple of network file servers, I attach to them //ip/share =
instead
of mapping drives (because mapped drives has it's own problems when =
the
servers are not available).
Because of that any setting I set for folders on these servers =
doesn't
stick. They immediately use the default template next time I attach =
but
depending on what's in the folder at that particular moment =
determines=20
which
default template they are going to use.
If I knew how the system was determining which default template to =
use I
could at least understand this seemingly inconsistant behavior and=20
possibly
avoid it.
If there was an off switch I could turn this crap off.
If I wanted one default view for local folders and another for =
remote due=20
to
speed reasons I can't do that.
See how this gets annoying real quick?
I'm also leary of setting the default templates (I did set one) =
because I
just know the first service pack is going to reset them all on me =
and undo
my defaults (been there many times) so what I'm going to do is dig =
into=20
the
registry and see if I can find an off switch for this insidious =
little
bastard .
If I were a programmer I'd write a control panel applet 5 colums of
checkboxes to set all of them on one screen, that's really what MS =
should
have done.
