subject: Re: Vista

From: "Geo."

No, my network connection for my vista machine is pegged at max. If I have
any other network activity being generated by the vista box it takes away
from my file copy speed.

As for the thing I'm calling a hang, it manifests in different ways but
since it doesn't "hang" with every file copy it's obviously not a
resources issue. It usually happens in the same directories and at the same
point so I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with what is in that
directory or the fact that others are accessing those files. That's the
only pattern I've been able to identify so far.

And the UI is responsive if you try to close the window, but it's totally
unresponsive if you try to right drag a file out of the window. That's why
I'm calling it a hang, certain file functions are totally locked up till it
completes its little walk of all the files.

Are you saying that when you copy files to the server that your machine
is pegged at 100% CPU? If not, there is idle time.

That the green bar stops is not a hang. The UI is responsive as you are
aware since you can close the window. Why would you try to be misleading about this?

Who says background activity is idle time activity? If I'm copying 2gig of
files to the server this extra network and disk activity is certainly not
idle time activity. And that's pretty typical of what I do, open a folder
and copy a bunch of new video to it.

As for the corruption hang, I haven't figured out exactly what causes it
and
am guessing that it's either file corruption or locked files since the
servers and the other devices are not windows based it's hard to tell but
every once in a while that green progress bar stops part way across and
hangs for several minutes. I usually just start my file copy and close the
directory window once it's started to get the system to stop wasting
  resources.

I've noticed this lately because I bought a new 2TB of storage and was
moving some massive amounts of files around, copy operations that take
many
hours to complete. So when I see the system wasting bandwidth and disk
that
I want to be used for my copy op I go looking for an off switch.

Again you are being unclear and your horrible analogies don't help.

Thanks for acknowledging that the folder contents display immediately
and
that the thumbnail extraction is a background activity. What I still
don't
get is that your assertion that it is a whole lot of activity that you
don't
need the system to spend resources on. It is a background activity. It's
not clear why you are concerned about idle time activity.

As for a corrupted file hanging the window, that would be interesting.
Is this something you made up as speculation or something real because you
never mentioned it before? If it is real, what type of file is this as
there are different thumbnail extractors for different types. If you have
third party software installed with video support it could be providing
the
extractor or even supplanting the system provided thumbnail extractors.

Yes the folder contents display immediately but the background activity
is
the problem because if one of the files is corrupt or locked by another
process it hangs the whole window. It's also a whole lot of activity
that
  I
don't need the system to spend resources on.

It's like driving a car that wants to slow down and read every street
sign
and if one is blocked from view it stops and waits till it can see the
  sigh.
I just want to get to where I want to go and damn the stupid system
  reading
    as I drive.

If I set the folder default template to say list or details view, it
still
does this stupid reading every file thing. Is there no off switch?

There is another thing with this that I've noticed, it doesn't take the
first frame of a video and use that for the icon, instead it reads what
appears to be a random number of frames and then grabs one. If I were to
create a icon in each video file would that stop this nonsense?

When I open a decent sized folder, you know the green progress bar that
appears in the address bar, well it can take 4 or 5 minutes before it
completes. That's a whole LOT of background activity I can do without.

If I wanted one default view for local folders and another for
remote
due to speed reasons I can't do that.

Are you saying that the folder contents are not displaying immediately
  with
thumbnail extraction happening in the background?

Thanks it does help but not a whole lot. Here's the annoyance I'm
  having.

I have a couple of network file servers, I attach to them //ip/share
    instead
of mapping drives (because mapped drives has it's own problems when
the
      servers are not available).

Because of that any setting I set for folders on these servers doesn't
stick. They immediately use the default template next time I attach
but
depending on what's in the folder at that particular moment determines
    which
default template they are going to use.

If I knew how the system was determining which default template to use
I
could at least understand this seemingly inconsistant behavior and
    possibly
      avoid it.

If there was an off switch I could turn this crap off.

If I wanted one default view for local folders and another for remote
  due
    to
speed reasons I can't do that.

See how this gets annoying real quick?

I'm also leary of setting the default templates (I did set one)
because
  I
just know the first service pack is going to reset them all on me and
  undo
my defaults (been there many times) so what I'm going to do is dig
into
    the
registry and see if I can find an off switch for this insidious little
      bastard .

If I were a programmer I'd write a control panel applet 5 colums of
checkboxes to set all of them on one screen, that's really what MS
  should
      have done.
