Dear Sports Fans;
As you all know the NHL will be taking a couple of weeks off in
February in order that many of it's players will be able to participate
in that Olympic tournament. In total 125 players from 9 different
countries are eligible to play in the Olympics, making hockey the most
international of the four major North American sports, and only behind
soccer, rugby and cricket in terms of international competitiveness and
participation.
The next 2 messages will contain all the selected NHLers broken
down by team. Those countries indicated by a (*) means that country is
participating in the preliminary round of which only two qualify. Only
once a teams goes to the next round can they use NHL players.
Here are the numbers broken down by country (23 is the maximum
allowed): Canada 23, United States 23, Russia 22, Sweden 18, Finland 14,
Czech Republic 12, Slovakia 8, Germany 3, Belerus 2.
Here are the numbers broken down by team: Colorado 9, NYRangers 8,
Philadelphia 8, Pittsburgh 8, Anaheim 7, Chicago 7, Dallas 5,
Edmonton 5, Los Angeles 5, NYIslanders 5, Ottawa 5, St. Louis 5, Tampa
Bay 5, Buffalo 4, Calgary 4, Montreal 4, New Jersey 4, Phoenix 4,
Toronto 4, Vancouver 4, Washington 4, Detroit 3, Florida 3, Carolina 2,
San Jose 2, and Boston 1.
Now if you are a purist who believes the Olympics should be
strictly amateur you can skip the next two messages, but for everyone
else, here is your chance to see who has made it from your favourite
team, and argue and complain about who was selected and who was left
off. With out further ado...
Sincerely Yours
David G. Riess
