I think it's only the server editions (w2k, w2k3) that have software raid
support built in.

If you do it on HW level, windows won't know it's raid'ed at all so it
supports it perfectly. I've seen some cheap-o motherboard raid systems run
for years without a problem. The only thing is, if you blow one disk after
two or so years, you won't be able to find a replacement (usually has to be
exactly the same for HW raids), so you'll have to build the whole thing
anew. Software based systems are better in that regard, as you can use
virtual disks and the physical disks can be just about any size/type.
