Having confronted Dr. David, Howard Brazee, International Man Of Mystery,
exclaimed:
HB> Go to just about any pre-season practice. There will be someone
HB> "auditioning" as enforcer, making sure he fights the biggest
HB> non-superstar players on the team. Without provocation.
Well not any pre-season training camp, and a completely different
situation from normal game play, and you can't assume it's completely
without provocation, since you're not on the ice with them watching and
hearing everything. You do however have the motivation correct (at
least for 90% of the time.)
This also not a situation General Managers like since they are
trying to encourage team unity and chemistry which literally fighting for
a position on the team runs counter to. Edmonton Oiler GM Glen Sather
(congratulations on the Hall Of Fame induction Slats) when during training
camp they had Bill Huard, Dennis Bonvie, George Laraque, and someother
player they had traded for whose name I can't recall right now, were all
vying for a spot on the team, commented that he didn't want to see a
fight breaking out every 10 minutes. As far as I know it remained
peaceful.
In this area the Buffalo Sabres held their training camp here in
Hamilton while the Toronto Maple Leafs held their camp up the road from
here in Kitchener. Because of the close proximity to one another, the
Toronto media was able to compare the two camps, and were all over the
Toronto management because there was three fights that occurred during
the Sabre camp and none during the Leaf camp. The media thought the
Leafs were too soft and not showing enough grit and determination.
Sometimes you just can't win...
Sincerely Yours
