Denver, like Green Bay, made a commitment to the return game. That may not
seem like it's the truth but it is. Believe it or not, a lot of teams in the
NFL don't do all the little things even when they see teams winning
championships by doing them. The Packers made a commitment to the return game
and Dismal Howard.
As for decades, I think that you're engaging in a little hyperbole. Denver
had some great returns from Upchurch but even after he was gone the team was
still the best in its division for many years (Milburn and Smith may not have
put up TDs, however, they gave the team decent field position). What hurt
them was not having a permanent guy and unless they go goofy, Gordon can give
them one for many years.
