Merely lip synchs of what has been written. Trust me, Dave, I've seen
everything you've said in ink long before your friends had this argument.
DN> Perhaps once.. but I refer specifically to today's strikes.
No different. Money has never been an issue except on the owner's part --
that is, their saving money for themselves, either by denying the players
benefits or their fair share of licensing.
DN> reasonable salaries, in today's pro sports world?.. if so, why are
DN> strikes, from the players standpoint, necessary?..
NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING concerning money has been the focus of the players'
anger with management. Maybe your view is colored by someone either in the
press or in management, who has gained some credibility with you and has been
able to convince you that the players are only concerned with money with all
their strikes (or ANY of their strikes). Payments to old timers and licensing
revenue for old timers and current players was among the many issues that
were part of the last NBA negotiations (Did you realize that with the
exception of some notables like Michael Jordan, the NBA players don't have
the rights to their images? This includes many old timers who would have
gotten that back had they kept their stupid mouths shut and let the players
alone. You'll hear about how some legend is unable to make money these days
and you'll either assume that it's the youngsters' fault when most of it was
his for allowing the owners to brainwash him into acting so stupidly. The
legends lost MILLIONS in payments and licensing fees when they spoke out
against the players and I don't have much sympathy for Cousy and his friends
when they talk about how the old timers aren't being taken care of because
they let the owners screw them).
DN> they're certainly served the players well! Do you see today's player
DN> strikes to be just as relevant and necessary?
Yes, just as I pointed out with the NBA players and their actions concerning
the old timers. This was within the last couple of years and every other
strike or near strike that has happened, past OR present has been for far
more than money. Why don't you go back and review the PLAYERS' side of the
issues to understand what they REALLY wanted and remember that most of the
*money* issues were the owners' side of the strike or near strike.
