Well, I mentioned my wish-list awhile back, so I guess JGT will drag
out his dead horse and accuse me of beating it, but here goes ...
The Jag CD-ROM drive aready has some sort of IO control capability,
as does Jerry. I think a simple SCSI controller could be adapted
with minimal hardware. With 3D0's M2 and BeBox both supporting low
cost PPC chips, I think it would be safe to bet that a PPC would work
well instead of the 68K for a true computer. For a low-end pseudo-puter,
they could have gone with the 68020 without hurting the cost too much.
And, of course, a bit more RAM.
Actually, I'm more into the idea of a VME card for the TT030 that has
the Jag chips on it for sound, video, and DSP/GPU processing. You
maybe keep the RAM, maybe drop it for lower cost, drop the 68K, add
the controlls necessary to fit it onto a VME bus card and then
write drivers for the TT030 and maybe write a SUN driver! Then you
get a good developement platform as well.
The Jag is really a nice machine. It would take a bit to make it
work as a real computer, although it would make a decent pseudo-computer.
I just don't think that low-end computers like that have a market.
There would be a market for VME (or PCI!) versions of the Jag on a
card - especially if they increase the clock rates on those chips
a bit!
BTW, Primal Rage on the Jag is disappointing to say the least.
