As much as people talk about players' *greed*, it's been the owners love of 
money (and their stupidity in overspending for free agents) that has extended 
the season so that they are *forced* to lop as many as 8 games. Maybe you 
haven't noticed but doubleheaders, which used to be quite prevelant, are as 
rare as a Cecil Fielder stolen base. Because they could charge more for two 
games, they spread out the games while extending the season. People say that 
the extra layer of playoffs has extended the season, howevr, it's just a 
symptom of the regular season disease.
