I think it used to be 154 games right before the 1969 season (when both 
leagues split into 2 divisions each...the NL East, NL West, AL East, AL 
West). It also used to be somewhere around 144 games back in the '50s. If I 
had my old Information Please almanac with me, I'd let you know.
