Primarily because the rifles in most arsenals today do not lend themselves to
ANY scope mount common to our sporting types. Many of the older rifles for
military use employed top-loading clips or stripper clips which the Redfield
type base blocked. At best, this resulted in slow reloading, and, at worst,
prevented loading completely.
