The major leagues all keep talking about expansion. I think this
is foolish.
Owners can make quick bucks with expansion - but when it comes time
to ask their communities for money for new facilities, they lose
leverage. There are communities in each sport which do NOT support
their teams financially.
And they lose fans with too many bad teams already. They lose fans
when there are so many teams that we can't expect OUR team to be
competitive (especially if we have the 1 winner/30 losers
mentality).
I can see maybe that TV is pushing for more teams in more TV
markets - although they were hurt when neither LA NFL team sold out
- and haven't succeeded in getting back an NFL team there.
In Europe, they keep league size down, with a method which
graduates and flunks teams back and forth between minor and major
leagues.
Diamond dealers have learned of the value of keeping supply below
demand - but US pro sports haven't learned that.
