Hello, Ian...
It's always interesting hearing from you - I have learned that you're a
dedicated modeler in several fields, but you've NEVER had one of your
birds in the air - is that right ?? Could it be that you are a "loner"
and that nobody else in your locale enjoys "normal" things ??
IM> How long is a normal field. I know normal is a big word:-) I am

Flying fields come in many different sizes, shapes, and colors - our
"new" field (we're into our second year) was built on an abandoned garbage
landfill with strong support of our local county adminstration and OVER
THE OBJECTIONS of the SC State environmental control beaurocracy. We only
have one landing strip at present, 600 feet X 100 feet closely mowed and
with 100 feet higher grass at each end - set into the mowed strip is a
300 x 25 paved portion for DF takeoff - this Winter we expect to install
another strip, all grassed, at 45 degree angle to the original. We are
fortunate to have this big area (about 30 acres) without any trees, power
lines, or other obstructions.

Yep, takes a lot of water and fertilizer for good grass - we have a
similar problem with grass growth - all our "soil" is mostly sand and
no nutrients - a soil analysis said we need "everything except sand".
IM> This hobby has cost me close to fifty thousand now. I sure hope that
IM> I recover that in pleasure:-)
My wife estimates that I have spent about the same (gr) - one of these
days, she is going to retaliate - oh, boy, there goes the bank account !!
Let us know your progress on your airport and your success in getting a
bird airborne. TTYL - Roger
