I'm certainly not a tape drive expert...I just use one to backup my hard drive,
but I've never tried to restore it. However, as I understand it, fsave writes
all the files into a single tape block and you have to use frestore to extract
stuff from an fsave file since normal os9 utilities don't know about the format
fsave uses. Of course, using frestore on something not created by save will be
sure to fail. I don't believe the index portion of the file is ever updated.
fsave just stores the date in backup_dates and uses this on incremental
backups.

Does this help?
