Mustek has some fair quality scanners at good prices, though for the 
difference in price, I'd prefer an HP.

I tend to assume that the tubes are dead since I don't have a tester.  I can 
get new and new-old-stock tubes at decent prices (by today's standards).  A 
pair of 6V6s or 6L6s will run me about $30 or so.  The transformers, by 
comparison, for a 15 to 30 watt guitar amp would run close to $200 (new 
Hammond).

I actually get along with the tube stuff better than I do the tranny stuff. 
The circuits are similar, but everything being so much bigger makes it easier 
to work on ~8-)
