I've had that problem with some older Coverite brand plastic film, as well as 
the stuff sold my Hobby Shack (Global).  I've also run into some problems 
with newer (relatively, 1993 or so) Monokote...  All I can say is run the 
iron as cool as you can and work carefully.  The film usually discolors 
somewhat before burning through.
