That's doing it the hard way.

Ouch. I rarely use the gun for anything other than melting epoxy. The only
other thing I'll use the gun for is to heat the film on a wing while twisting
to correct warp. I just use the iron (with a 100% cotton baby sock on it),
even over open areas.

That's what I'd probably do. If the rudder was damaged (I didn't catch what
caused the damage or type of repair), there's a chance that the fin
attachment was weakened as well.
