Anand Patwardhan, perhaps India's foremost documentary filmmaker, has been
raising the world's understanding of social injustices in his native
country for two decades. He has also been active in movements for housing
rights of the urban poor, for communal harmony, against the Narmada dam,
and against the unjust. His latest film, FATHER, SON AND HOLY WAR (1994, 2
hours), which examines the connection between religion, men and violence,
recently won a special jury award at the Vancouver International Film
Festival. His earlier film, IN THE NAME OF GOD or RAM KE NAAM (1992, 90
min.), which dealt with the rise of Hindu fundamentalism as witnessed in
the Ayodhya crisis, won the National Award for Best Investigative Film,
the Filmfare Award for Best Documentary, the Critics Award in Fribourg
Festival, the Ecumenical Prize at Nyon (Switzerland), and the Citizen's
Award in Yamagata (Japan).

The film: Focusing on the Ayodhya controversy and filmed prior to the
Babri Masjid demolition, Ram ke Naam examines the motivations that would
ultimately lead to the drastic actions of the Hindu militants, as well as
the efforts of secular Indians, many of them Hindus, to combat the
religious intolerance and hatred that has seized India in the name of God.
