Sounds typical of Fords' twin I-beam front end.  Years ago (c1980), they sold 
king pin kits to rebuild them.  When the job was done, the front end needed 
alignment. After a 5 mile drive to the alignment shop, the =new= king pins 
had as much slop as the old ones.
