Terry May had this to say to Rob Ferrara and I quote:
RF> You will note that 8 of the 11 head coaching vacancies went to
RF> former head coaches. It's not that much of a black vs white
RF> thing as it is a proven box office head coach vs an unproven
RF> head coach. The NFL desperately needs an infusion of new ideas,
RF> talent, and innovation yet they are scared to death to go out on
RF> that limb. I suspect Seifert will also be the top candidate
RF> next year. He fits my profile (Proven former head coach) and
RF> yours (White). My profile is what owners look for. Not yours.
TM> Then how do you explain the 49ers?
8 out of 11. There were three others. The 49ers are one of
them. If I was an owner looking for an edge, there's no way
I'd recycle a head coach. I'd go after someone new. The one
that leaps out is Steve Spurrier. He was ripe for the picking
last year. He'll be equally ripe this year if his team wins
another championship.
