Rob Ferrara was thrown for a loss after he said:
RF> Shuler missed terribly on open receivers even when he did
RF> have time.
Which, would be AT BEST, all of 3 times. I say that because he was 5 of 11
with 3 interceptions so that meant that there were 3 passes that didn't get
caught by either side.:-)
RF> Steve Young was 18-21 despite getting sacked five
Come on, Rob. The 49ers had little to do to make it 33-0. Young got sacked 6
times, however, more often than not, he had plenty of time AND a lot more
time than any of the Saints' QBs.
RF> You will note that 8 of the 11 head coaching vacancies went to
RF> former head coaches. It's not that much of a black vs white
RF> thing as it is a proven box office head coach vs an unproven
RF> head coach.
There were only 10 new head coaches. All that happened to Coslet was that he
had the interim removed and he deserved it. You might be able to make a case
for Vermeil, Parcells, Reeves and Ditka as "box office coaches" but that's
it. Maybe you're thinking of Ross that way but he was a solid pick for
reasons other than box office (Box office was probably his worst attribute.
Atlanta would have gotten more box office out of him, even more than what
they might have gotten out of Reeves). Bugel and Carroll are both retreads
(and frankly, that's where I'd put Reeves) while Gilbride, Fassel and
Mariucci are unproven *white* hopes.
RF> He fits my profile (Proven former head coach) and yours (White). My
RF> profile is what owners look for. Not yours.
Despite the track records of blacks in the NBA, NFL and MLB, the owners are
all too willing to recycle WHITE coaches or hire unproven white coaches
rather than give a black like Thomas or Lewis a chance. MY profile is what
owners are looking for. Lewis has been in coaching since 1969 (going back to
college) and in the NFL since 1983. Gilbride's first *pro* experience was in
the CFL in 1986 and his first NFL experience came in 1989. Thomas started
coaching in the NFL in 1981. Fassel's first *pro* experience was in 1974 in
the WFL, his next came in 1984 in the USFL and he finally made the NFL in
1991. Mariucci first became a *pro* coach in 1985 in the USFL and joined the
NFL that same year (Ironically, he was the QB coach in Green Bay while Lewis
was the offensive coordinator). You can look at a lot of the white coaches
and you'll find that they had far less experience than the black coaches did
*when* they finally got a shot.
RF> Mantle?
Eeep. Meant Maris...Geeez.
