Native American Music Awards Honors Rock Guitarist Robbie Robertson
The awards ceremony was apparently held in Ledyard, Connecticut at
the Foxwoods Resort Casino and was hosted by Wayne Newton.  The
event was attended by nearly 1500 people.
Robbie Robertson, who is a Mohawk descendant, won the lifetime
achievement award at the first Native American Music Awards.  He is
credited for helping to open the door of the music world for Native
Americans.  More than 150 musicians were nominated for awards in 20
categories.
Best rap artist award went to Litefoot, a Cherokee.  Best female
artist was won by Joanne Shenandoah, who is a descendant of the
Oneida.  She also won the award for best children's album.  Best
male artist was earned by R. Carlos Nakai, a Navajo-Ute, who uses a
Native American flute in his music.
"American Warriors: Songs for Indian Veterans," which is a
compilation of pow-wow songs dedicated to war veterans, was chosen
for record of the year.
Jimi Hendrix, who had Cherokee ancestry, became the first inductee
into the Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame.  Hendrix died in
1970.
