Really?  I don't think that would necessarily have been the case.
The North Vietnamese fought against an overwhelmingly superiour
force, yet they won.  Same thing with the Afghanis.  I think it
might have been possible to have won against the European settlers
before the colonies became too well-established.  
But we'll never know....
