I can not think of a tax benefit per say for a home based business.
However, a business run from a home gives one the advantage that on good or 
bad days, weather and money wise, one has easily accessible and a cozy place 
to work in or from.
Tax wise, if one has other income then the loss from the home or small 
business, is deductible from that other income.  As a rule it gives one an 
opportunity to start a new venture without investing in rental and other 
daily offices expenses.
Each case has its own merits.
