Correct.  One way to help the problem is to use a fixed pitch font, like 
Courier.  Assuming that you're talking about prices, and you want the 
columns to line up at the decimal point, the better way is to use a decimal 
tab.
In Word 7, you can make a decimal tab by hitting the button at the left end 
of the ruler until the "inverted T" with a decimal comes up.  Then place a 
tab where you want the decimals to align.  To use it, just tab and type 
your number in.  The decimal will align on the tab.
