subject: Using tables

I like to use tables when creating certain documents, policies, etc.
however I've noticed that if you type to a certain length within a
column in a table it doesn't print right. Seems that some data from one
column jumps over to another column which ruins the final product.
To fix this I've had to add additional lines and cut and paste data to
help stop the bleed over.
Anyone out there know if there is a way to fix this within word without
having to juggle the text within columns? I'm using word 6.0 for
windows.
