USA Today did its football preview this weekend and you have to wonder if
these people really have a clue or they just write these articles on a whim.
Anyway, someone name Jarrett Bell wrote "Las year, Indianapolis was the NFL's
last unbeaten team, started 5-1, battled injuries, then barely missed the
playoffs." Uh...Jarrett, gee, I hate to say this but...they did make the
playoffs, where were you?
Another good one was Gordon Forbes, who rambled on the "olden days" rag and
said "Yet, the old-timers with whistles and stopwatches seldom had to cope
with alcohol or drug problems. Vermeil is coping with an assault and alcohol
case (Lawrence Phillips) and a cocain case (James Harris)."
But, I'll give him credit for continuing with "Vermeil remains unconvinced
that today's coach has it tougher. ' You know and I know that in the old days
there were problems with drugs,' Vermeil says. 'They just overlooked them.'"
At least he had the guts to allow the coach to put truth back into the
fantasy lives that most USA Today reporters live when it comes to the past.
