FJ>Amen to that! Hugh got .333 bullets made for him from Barnes, but it
FJ>took a long time to get them so another of our bunch, a machinist,
FJ>made a swage to reduce .338 bullet down to .333. We used an arbor
FJ>press at first, but found out that a RCBS rockchucker had enough
FJ>mechanical advantage at the end of the stroke to nibble away and push
FJ>the bullet through. These swaged-down bullets were surprisingly
FJ>accurate for having undergone such a messy procedure. We all agreed
FJ>that a .338-06 would be the way to go if you were starting from
FJ>scratch, but Hugh already had the .333-06 picked up in a trade and it
FJ>was sort of a challenge to make good with it... and he
FJ>certainly did!
It's amazing what you can get away with, sometimes. I assume
these were solid bullets (no cladding), so you didn't have to
worry about the cladding being damaged and coming apart in
mid-air. EP
FJ> EP> FJ>I'd imagine that the Ackley has been blown out and the shoulder
FJ> EP> FJ>advanced to give a bigger boiler room. The .333 OKH had
FJ> EP> essentially FJ>the same case volume as the 30-06. That increase
ught
FJ> EP> to give you a FJ>SUPERB round.
FJ> EP> I'm thinking about doing it. I have lots of surplus 30-06
FJ> EP> cases; and some spare '98 actions already in 30-06. So, it
FJ> EP> seems like a natural. Ernie P.

FJ>Ernie, keep us posted on how this turns out. You ought to really have
FJ>an excellent piece for dropping the big beasts... Good Luck!
FJ>73 FrankO
Well, it may take a while, Frank. There are two rifles in line
ahead of this one, in the production chain; a Palma rifle and a
handbuilt replica of an 1820's Hawken. Not to mention the half
dozen in process. (-: But I've pretty much decided I'm going to
have the 338-06 Improved or a .338 Magnum. I'm leaning towards
the .338-06 because I have so much spare brass; and the Mauser
action. Plus, it seems like an interesting project. Ernie P.
