Yep, snow covered ice acts as a layer of insulation.

I suppose that could happen. Fish kills up here are largly caused by
long winters coupled with deep ice on shallow lakes, leaving an
inadequate volume of oxygenated water. Further south where it is
both warmer and more heavily populated the main cause of reduced
oxygen in the water is low water levels from drought, algae bloom
from farm fertilizer runoff or other pollution, or a sustained
increase in water temperature during heat waves.
Coarse trash fish like tilapia, carp and catfish tend to survive
whereas the tastier game fish like whitefish, trout and walleyes
die. Some of the former seem to be able to thrive in damp mud!

Title: Vietamese Braised Basa Fillets Fish With Thick Soy Sauce
Categories: Vietnamese, Fish, Sauces
Yield: 2 servings
2 Basa (Catfish) Fillets
3 ds Fish Sauce
1 tb Thick soy sauce
1 tb Oil for frying
Rinse the fish under cold water. Heat a tbsp of oil in saucepan.
Place the fillets in the pan and fry on both sides. Squirt some
fish sauce onto the fish. It will turn white in color when fully
cooked. Then take some thick soy sauce and rub the color into the
fish with a spoon on both sides. In Vietnamese my mom calls this
nuoc mau or color water. This makes the fish taste a little more
salty. Serve over white rice.
