JP> In that text from the Coast Guard, they make a few references

JP> that to the proper character the greek " miu " for the (u)sec. I

JP> 109 ". How can I now place that into the search and replace window
 JP> ? The search would be " usec " and the replace " Symbol109 sec ".
You found the symbol, that's one step (you could also have typed it as
ALT+230 (on numeric keypad)).
The way to use these symbols in the replace window is:
type the text as you want it to be somewhere in your document (the
mu-symbol;sec that is) mark the word (dubbleclick on it) and cut it to
the clipboard. Now Edit/Replace and when you enter the replace with text
just use CTRL+v to paste it in the textbox.
In this particular case you could have typed 'ALT+230,sec' to enter the
information, since the character you wanted was part of the normal ASCII
set.
