It sounds as if Word is doing a 'quick save'. In the Tools menu click on
Options. You'll find a tab Save (not really sure about the English names
since I'm running a localized version of Word). In this tab sheet should
be an option Quick Save. As a default this is turned on. Try if turning
it off prevents these errors from happening. Useful options in this
window are Always make back-up, Back-up every ... minutes.
