| subject: | UUCP!!! |
To: Paul Edwards BL> Yair, I know that, but slip/ppp is by far the dominant BL> connection, with UUCP linked into that. PE> Who does UUCP over slip/ppp? I don't believe that is correct. Oh shit... I can't remember. In my search of the SPCUG BBS lists I came across at least two programs that let you pick up UUCP mail using a SLIP/PPP account. They said things like: "it's cheaper and easy! No need to set up special accounts..." It was during my search of "UCP" rather than "UPC" (grin). You ought to give it a go... I can run another search if you like and download them for you. BL> In fact, I thought that was what Paul intended: to run a UUCP BL> mail system on the end of his normal ISP account. PE> So you'd like to have to set up BOTH slip + uucp instead of PE> just uucp? No... it's just that that was what I thought you were going to do. I only want UUCP e-mail becasue it's a Fido substitute. BL> Fido was set up to save time online; the Internet is developing BL> the other way. PE> UUCP was set up to save time online too. Yair... and the Internet is developing the other way. As far as I understand, ISP's provide an hour-a-day for a dollar or so, and if you get UUCP they charge you the same for ten minutes! You save nothing and lose 50 minutes. The internet developed by using actual telephone lines during gaps in other services, but that's changing as its use grows. Now they're setting up the possibility of permanent connections using gpas in the Internet service itself! A system cost depends on capital outlay. If it costs you $250 million to run a dedicated satellite link and a million people use it, then that's only $50 a year each to make it profitable... with permanent connection. We're nearly there. My attraction to UUCP is for other reasons than time online. To me, live online means telephone voice. Why type when you can talk? Offline mail is different.
