I picked up the document.  This wasn't any trouble at all, once I knew the 
URL.  My company just connected an ISDN line to my home and getting things 
from the internet is a bit quicker now.

As I suspected the documents are converted to word tables and that is the 
source of your "bugs".  I think they convert to tables because the original 
document was formatted in Wordperfect parallel columns. There is no direct 
analogy to this in Word.
To get rid of the bugs --
1. Place your cursor anywhere in the text.
2. From the menus
        Table
        Select Table
        Table
        Convert Table to Text
        OK
Voila!
